Iowa's Courthouses: Cass County

Start page: Doors

View of courtroom from the west facing the judge's bench on the east wall
The courtroom is two stories tall, with dramatic Art Deco lighting and wood paneling. Behind the judge's bench, the panel is highly polished with intricate carving and aluminum details. The pattern from the wood carving is repeated in the plaster molding.
Entrance facing south. The stairs to the second floor continue to the south.
The entrance is lined with wood panels with a marble dedication tablet. The floor and steps are terrazzo, with marble wainscot. Notice the decorative grill over the radiators, aluminum wall decoration, and plaster molding. The stairs to the second floor are directly across the hallway.
Stairwell from first to second floor from the landing
The stairwell features patterns of terrazzo, iron and brass railing, and textured walls. Notice the molded plaster decoration on the second floor hallway.
A view of the counter - metal with a new top
This is a typical counter in the PWA era courthouse - metal fixtures designed for efficiency in each office, originally with a linoleum top - only the counter top needed replacing after decades of service.
